GEE Energy App - Scaling Customer Experience From 100 to 2,000 Users

As GEE Energy rapidly expanded from approximately 100 customers to over 2,000, customer expectations evolved just as quickly. Users wanted greater visibility into their electricity usage, billing, solar exports, and live battery performance. VPP customers especially wanted real-time insights into how their batteries were operating within the ecosystem. At the same time, the business needed a scalable digital experience that reduced support overhead and improved customer trust. Recognising this need, I led the design and development of the GEE Energy mobile application — a native iOS and Android experience built using React Native.

The app became a central customer portal where users could: Track electricity usage and feed-in tariff data Monitor live solar and battery performance Access billing and payment history Pay invoices directly within the app Set up direct debit and automated payments View energy insights and VPP activity in real time The platform unified fragmented energy data into a clean, user-friendly mobile experience designed specifically for electricity customers who were often unfamiliar with technical energy terminology.
Turning the Idea Into Reality
I began by whiteboarding customer pain points and mapping key journeys around billing, energy monitoring, and battery visibility. After analysing energy retailer apps and fintech-inspired payment experiences, I created low-fidelity wireframes and interaction flows that prioritised simplicity and clarity.
Using my experience in React Native, I developed the entire application independently while leveraging AI coding tools like Anthropic Claude Code and OpenAI Codex as collaborative development assistants. This process also became an exploration into AI-assisted software development workflows, where I learned how to combine rapid prototyping with production-ready engineering practices.

Because the app was built with a single React Native codebase, we were able to simultaneously deliver native experiences for both iOS and Android while maintaining development efficiency and fast iteration cycles.

The GEE Energy App helped transform customer experience during a critical growth phase for the company. It not only reduced operational friction but also gave customers transparency and control over their energy ecosystem, bridging the gap between traditional electricity retailing and modern digital energy platforms.
